UK #1 release
This is the first Sony release from the album Travelling Without Moving and had its first airing in the UK on 8 July 1996. Released on 19 August, it entered the UK charts at number three making it an all time Jamiroquai best, and dropped two places to number five the following week. However, in the UK radio airplay chart, the single made it all the way to the number one position.
In the UK, the CIN official year-end top 100 chart for 1996 (01 January - 31 December 1996) placed Virtual Insanity at number 39 with sales at around 310,000 (16 weeks in chart).
On the UK Singles Chart Page for 25 August 1996, James Masterton wrote:
"New album time for Jamiroquai, and this is the first single from that forthcoming release. As was to be expected his enormous popularity amongst a dedicated group of fans causes the demand for this single to be higher than ever and at a stroke Virtual Insanity becomes their biggest ever hit single, sailing past the Number 9 peak of Stillness In Time from just over two years ago."

The video for this single was nominated for the Select MTV Award as part of the 1996 MTV Europe Music Awards. This is the ultimate MTV viewers choice award. Select is MTV's daily interactive 'jukebox' show which receives over 4,000 calls from viewers selecting their favourite music videos every day. The five nominations in this category were selected by viewers during a special Select MTV Weekend in early November 1996 - a nine hour marathon of on-air requests which saw Europe's favourite 100 videos being compiled and then reduced, by viewer votes, to the five nominations for The MTV Europe Music Awards Select category. Sadly, Virtual Insanity did not win the award. Jay, however, did make an appearance to present the MTV Best Group Award to Oasis.

Jamiroquai are absolutely huge in Japan, and this showed in ZIP Hot 100 singles for 1996 where Virtual Insanity was placed at number five in the chart.
