In its first week after release, it entered the UK single charts at number 6, and as James Masterton wrote on the UK Singles Chart Page for 6 December 1996:
"The second single proper from what is certain to become a succession of Jamiroquai hits over the coming months. The man can do no wrong at present and the Top 3 success of Virtual Insanity is followed by the similarly nagging funk of Cosmic Girl which becomes their fourth Top 10 hit."
From good to bad.... On 7 December, New Musical Express wrote...
"... "She sends me into hyper space when I see her pretty face," - cheep-cheep-doodle-squibble, his baybay's living on the moon etc, etc. (and who can blame her?) They'd have been better off with the one on the album that's three-and-half minutes of a didgeridoo solo 'cos that, make no mistake, has The Funk. Unlike this, which has nothing but The Bunkem."
In the UK, the CIN official year-end top 100 chart for 1996 (01 January - 31 December 1996) placed Cosmic Girl at number 99 with sales at around 150,000 (5 weeks in chart).

In the UK imports section of the CD5 on-line review posting for January 1997 (check out alt.music.dance), the second Cosmic Girl single received the following review:
"Finally, a Jamiroquai release that will hopefully replace Space Cowboy in the rotation of DJs all across the USA!!;-) Two full mixes, with the [Classic Mix] by David Morales being somewhat similar to Space Cowboy in feel, if a bit less grating. Pretty subdued piano, Morales drums and interesting "outerworld" sound effects combine with a very pretty vocal performance. The other mix, the [Quasar Mix] has a VERY retro 1970s disco feel to it. Not bad, but not as good as Morales. Should be huge in the US this winter."
