Deeper Underground, which was written for inclusion on the sountrack to the movie Godzilla, appeared in the summer of 1998 and was included as a bonus track on the Synkronized album in 1999.
In August 2006 the single was reissued as part three of five 12" remix releases - including a new remix of the track by Paul Jackson.
This is Jamiroquai's contribution to the soundtrack for the film Godzilla which opened in the US in June 1998.
After reaching the top spot in its first week of release for selling 89,000 copies, the www.dotmusic.com chart commentary noted:
The film may be hated by the critics but it does not stop the soundtrack producing the biggest hit of the week. As 'Godzilla' finally opens in this country the song that plays over the end credits charges straight to the top of the charts, helped in no small way by the expensive video which sees lead singer Jay Kay survive a wave of computer generated destruction. It marks a triumphant first Number One hit for Jamiroquai, five years after their Top 40 debut with 'Too Young To Die'. Since then the band have amassed a string of hits, five of which have made the Top 10 but until now only 'Virtual Insanity' has penetrated the Top 3. 'Deeper Underground' is duly the 796th Number One hit."
The video - directed by Mike Lipscombe for Tony Kaye's company K Music Video - features Jay Kay watching 'Godzilla' in a cinema auditorium which eventually gets swamped by tidal waves, Godzilla's foot, flying cars and helicopters. Jay Kay, who suffered a back injury during the filming, apparently received applause from the crew for his efforts.
In it's second week, the single dropped to number 5 in the UK singles chart after being toppled off the top slot by the Spice Girls who sold 277,000 copies of Viva Forever.
In the offical year end singles chart for 1998, Deeper Underground was placed at number 29.
The CD itself has the European catalogue number, but the cardboard sleeve has the UK Promo CD number (XPCD 2274) in addition to another European number (11-005312-17).
The tracklisting on this CD looks like it's really the same as the Australian release but with different mix names. This is often the case that the same mix of a track is released under different names.
This is a promo only CD which was given away by some US record stores when a copy of the Godzilla soundtrack was bought. Jay's mix is the metro mix on the UK CD #1 release.
