Saturday was the qualifier session for the pro-celebrity race at the opening event of the Formula 1 season at the Bahrain International Circuit and Jay didn't make it to pole position for the start of Sundays race (although I believe he was the fastest celebrity driver). According to a press release at the circuit website, five-time Olympic gold medalist Sir Steve Redgrave will start on pole position for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix Pro-Celebrity race on Sunday.
I couldn't find details of starting grid positions, but the press release did includes a quote from Jay...
Jay Kay revealed his strategy earlier in the week saying: "I'm planning on sticking to [Pink Floyd drummer Nick] Mason's tail and then just overtaking him on the final straight. I think he’s a great driver but I’m going to give him a real run for his money! I’m thrilled to be in Bahrain for the first race of the Formula One season, it's going to be amazing….I'm even more thrilled to be asked to race – any excuse to get out on the track and I’ll jump at it!"
Some photos from the qualifying sessions, showing Jay with a bright orange Sony Ericsson crash helmet, can be seen at the Sutton Motorsport Images website.
Other news stories from the grand prix have Jay spotted talking to tennis player Boris Becker in the pitlane!
