I made a mistake with the MTV Nominations last week. Jamiroquai have actually been nominated for 10 awards, with the extra one being "MTV Europe's Viewers Choice" award. Sony S2's video commissioner, Mike O'Keef, says, "We are thrilled. Virtual Insanity' success is down to Jonathan Glazer's brilliant direction and Jay's inspired idea. No other artist could have pulled this off because, like all ground-breaking videos, it was a high risk idea that might easily have ended in disaster." With 10 award nominations, the band are the most nominated act in the US awards. The Press Association reported the nominations on 23 July as "Jamiroquai are set to dominate America's MTV Video awards after gaining a massive 10 mentions in the nominations today. Funk band Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity video featured singer Jay Kay dancing in a room with moving walls and furniture. The clever special effect pushed it to the top of the field in today's nominations, beating even American rock favourite Beck, who picked up seven mentions. Virtual Insanity's director Jonathan Glazer was nominated for best video, best new artist, best direction, best choreography, best special effects, best art direction, best editing, best cinematography, breakthrough video and in the European category. The across-the-board success will be some compensation for the group, whose album Travelling Without Moving failed to make last week's Mercury Music Prize shortlist despite being highly tipped. But the band has some way to go to equal the impact of British acts the Prodigy and the Spice Girls in the United States -- Travelling Without Moving has sold more than 500,000 copies there but its top chart position was 43 in 25 weeks in the charts."
