Rock in Rio set list
Added on Saturday 27 May 2006, 00:14 (BST)
Here is the set list for the gig performed at the Rock in Rio festival in Lisbon, Portugal on Friday night.
  • Canned Heat, Space Cowboy, Cosmic Girl, Revolution 1993, Little L, Use The Force, Love Foolosophy/Main Vein, Time Won't Wait, Alright, Deeper Underground
For those wondering why it looks so short, I can only assume that it was planned that way - the timings given at the AOL and XM radio websites indicated a 75 minute set, which although I thought was probably just for a "near-live" edited broadcast, now turns out to be the actual full set.

I've seen the show & it was hot but too short. Anyway, I've never enough of Jamiroquai.

68 minutes

this stupid time, I thought I was available to saw the band but I forgot that when here is friday on portugal is saturday. I hate my stupid luck!! has anyone recorded it? That would be great :(

Hi all!

Ok, after hearing the excellent sound quality recording of this gig I can give a better opinion about the concert.
I think the band played very well and very tight. You can hear they performed very powerful. Well done guys!
One point of disappointment: they haven't changed a thing. We all know this setlist, it's still the same as they did in 2005! So if we are not lucky we'll see a performance very close to the ones in 2005. I think it's good to change some things from time to time: different tracks, different versions, some extensions, etc. I hope jamiroquai will do these things in the coming gigs.
Enjoy the first (high quality) soundboard recording of a Dynamite-gig!

LLCoolJR how can we enjoy the recording? where?

i am listening to the recording..i like revolution best,..really powerful performance...i would wish some extra tunes for the upcoming concerts ...oh i listen to it now the third time..hehehe..

With good luck maybe you can create an account

I've been there, in fact i just arrived home from the Rock in Rio. Shakira was great, but Jamiroquai was absolutely amazing. Too short, but in order to play all four bands since 19h GMT friday, they had to reduce the time on each band.

hi everyone, i have been waiting to see jamiroquai perform at rock in rio for the last few days and sadly i didnt get a chance to see them perform. did anyone record the performance? it would be greatly appreciated if anyone did, so that david could put the performance on the downloads page.

Please also check the thread (look at the more recent posts) at Jamirotalk for links to the torrent and other downloads. Thanks to those who provided the files.

No comment... Funkadelic lost his funkty soul :(

Just a question : Where is the bass ? Please...
Nick, Stuart, I miss you :(

yeah, the bass is lacking in Jamiroquai

The show was amazing but short. The sound was great and he did an excellent performance.
Now i need to see another gig because i became an addicted...
thank you jamiroquai

you have forgotten Paul ??!

No Kallia, I just want to say that in the old days (from 93 to 2003), The Bass was the most important instrument in the band and was perfectly played by two genius named Zender and Fyffe. Two monsters of groove. Now the bass is the last instrument on satge and in balance : we can't hear it clearly, doesn't have its "global" sound anymore and is played by a too common (but good) musician. That's life but its sooooo cruel to hear this...
:( :( :(

what a perform in rock in rio guys...i love your since i listen music but i was hoping more...so short,so short:( and jay kay?whats matter?he wasnt electric as usual...i just can wait for one single show here in portugal...just me and jay kay:)))) kiding...(sorry my f***ing englinsh!=P

i just thought i'd send this in response to some of the comments.the reason the set perhaps seemed short is that we were restricted to a 1 hour 15 minute set, there were some technical problems before we went on which shaved a few minutes off the start also.if you go over your allotted time on festivals like this you recieve a fine not too mention pissing off the next act.in regard to Funkadelics comments, you are of course entitled to your opinion. My opinion is that Paul is an amazing bass player who improves the sound of Jamiroquai helping to create a more solid groove alongside Derrick and Sola.his sound is solid and consistent. He's a fine musician with tremendous feel, thats why he was chosen. What you hear mix wise is down to the out front mix which of course changes slightly from show to show.On a festival we don't always get to soundcheck so levels may be off balance.
anyway ,i just thought i'd put in my two cents worth. We hope to be adding some new tunes to the set for the upcoming shows also time permitting.see you at the shows
cheers

Rob

Paul Turner absolutely rocked...I saw Fyffe live in 2001 and saw Paul two times already and Paul is far better than Fyffe! Better Groove, better technique, such a great feel...you must be out of your minds!!
Paul is a bass master!

I was in Rock in Rio and everybody around me were talking about the bassplayer that looked like sting...how great he sounded!
I just read these critics...I don't understand!
The highlights were Paul and Sola in this friday concert...get a life mates!

i think derrick is getting old he doesn t play like before

It is so cool that Rob posted on this thread. I am in Southwest Georgia (saw Jamiroquai live in Atlanta, 1999) and I listened to the concert live in my car on my XM radio. Despite the time constraints (which is understood given the number of headliners), great show, especially for those of us who cannot travel to see them perform live!!!

BTW, Paul kicks butt on bass [for example, check out the video clips from the Tokyo Budokhan (sic) performance]

Hey Rob, if you are still reading these posts, please tell JK and management to come back to the States (preferably Atlanta)!

i tell u the band doesn t play like before because we are in 2006 and drums and percussion are playing like 10 years ago and the same way days after days .the rythm section never find new grooves .rob and matt are always looking for new sound and new way of produce .they are composers not derrick or solla thats it cheers

I invite all the fans to read more from this concert at the Portuguese website, JPortugal.com! On the next days there will be news...

Convido a todos os portugueses que vejam o JPortugal.com, haverão muitas noticias, e coisas novas sobre o concerto em Portugal!

Ate breve!

first heard it live on italian radio( thanks to sandi on jpp), then saw it on aol :D liked it of course, guys did a great job!!!!

If anyone was able to record the show, I would be most "grateful" if they could "share" it with me. RayT60@aol.com Thanks

Rob, Thank for your comments!

yeah, thanks rob for contributing your comment! it made things clearer on what actually happened. and you should also tell JK to bring the band back to australia! funk on!

Rob, it's always a pleasure to read your words ansd to have your reaction after our comments. Paul is definitely a good bassplayer and a great musician but it's only my opinion, not a general view. Maybe, I'm wrong ;) You're great man and real gentleman Rob. All my affection :) Cheers Rob "chopper" Harris

John, Derrick and sola is always the best rythm section on earth. I love Jamiroquai cause the musicians evolve all the time. Matt doesn't play in 2005/06 like he played during the Midnight sun tour in 03. Rob changes his sound, his vision in this tour. The only thing I regret with Derrick is his new drumset. There is not many nuances in the sound, in the tom-tom like before. It's too consistant. Anyway, he's still the best drummer. I love you all men ;)

One more to john (sorry) : Derrick and Sola are real musicians and great composers (don't forget, Derrick wrote Cosmic Grirl !) Cheers man

Just a detail concerning the show : during the verse of Deeper Underground, I can hear the little electronic effects played by Matt (just after "I'm going DU...". Am I dreaming or these effects are back again ? (cause they don't play it during the dynamite tour)

lol! geez funkadelic, get it all out of your system...but all the guys are magnificent players! funk on!

i actually agree with jhon i think derrick is not as efficient as before is getting old and for cosmic girl all the band signed the track and he just came with the same disco groove he does everyday for the past ten years jay will fire him like he does with all the musicians after he burn them and took everything from them and today u are right jhon derrick is burn

i think jay change the band completly for the past 5year and to get a complete renewall he should change his drummer to get a knew vain for the band ; if not it s gonna continue to be the same groove and the sales will continue to go down; anyway i love jay voice its unique

never talk about best rythm section in the world u should lesson to music and people like steve gad or paulino da costa u will be surprise about the little disco groove that play derrick all the time .without jay derrick has no job i will go to see jay in germany

actually when u say that u may be not wrong because my best percussion part in dynamite was thallula and sola didn t play in it and for the songs they were better in funk oddysse when matt and rob programmed it cheers will be in germany

Right Humphrey, Steve Gadd is a master of rythm. But Derrick is also a master. He's got his style and is unique. Without him (and Sola), Jamiroquai is definitely dead.

a funk jazz band should have a jazz drummer a very creative drummer not a disco drummer but u know its jay s rob and matt choice but all that sound a bit mechanical where is the felling in the groove the four on the floor is a little bit far away from todays music where is the jazz rock band cheers to u all

funkadelic the band has changed completly since the beginning and its still there we are not talking about led zep derrick can be replaced like everybody has been replaced becauuse at the end jay is the band and he needs new people to get creative and alive again thats what he did with rob and matt

A nice setlist but... very short. I listen once Main Vein live at Gijon, adn TWW is a great song.

WHEN, WHEN, WHEN SPAIN ??????????????????

i just look at the cover u re right solla doesn t play on thallula its an american guy and it s actually better percussion more artistic than the rest of the track beautifull track is it rob composing the track ?

may be a good young drummer who wants to proove will give new blood to the backing more cymbals play may be more jazz rock style there s a lot of them in london it s like in a good soccer team jay should be the captain and move forward because it s sound a bit the same all the time . i think he will do it soon like he did it for all the player in his band . people should realise the chance they ve got to play music with jay and try to give there best like rob and matt involvment in the album . u can see that on the 2 last albums all the tracks are sign by matt and rob .not one cosign by sola or derrick jay is not crazy ha knows who to work with . have agood day

may be a good idear let jay decide i think like ron i think next album he will do it to go back to the top .i think he s gonna finish what he start years ago put young blood in to renew and i think his right u take idears from young people that lesson and play young ask pelee to play in the world cop in germany its will be funny its the same for drummer cause its a very physical instrument one day u have to stop and play jazz in small club

I say . . . take the voodoo dolls away from DVO !!!

Joking aside: Whatever happens to the band's formation is 'Sir' JK's decision and responsibility, we should put our trust in that. And a bad viiibe in the band is no good for anyone, so wether those choices are made for professional or other reasons to change band members then we should appreciate and support that change, and not riskly shoot off possibly frightening and hurtful speculative comments about why this happens.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for reading the comments and for posting your reaction.
And after hearing the broadcast: I think Paul's doing a great job, but we couldn't hear him clearly due to levels which are out off balance.
Thanks again and hope to hear some different tracks in the coming gigs, especially Rotterdam and London! ;)

Jeroen // LLCoolJR

when u love an artist u have the right to give ur opinion thats what is democraty there is nothing wrong to talk about the futur of ur favorite artist and comment his work if thats not the case don t comment at all and don t open a forum on jay kay

actually all that start about paul work i think the guy just arrive let him start don t be hard on him the reorganisation of a band is a very tough job for jay

I've got say here, that Paul is an excellent bassist, with loads of groove, who knows perfectly well, what h'es doing. He gave a spectacular concert in Rock In Rio, i was in the front row, and that can asure you all.

Rob had perfect solos, he was really great, as well as Sola, Derrick and the "girls".

For me, and it's my opinion, I wish Paul Turner keeps on the Jamiroquai for many more hears. Musicians like him, you don't find easilly nowadays. Preserve what's good, and give him more confidence to keep doing his superb contribution to Jamiroquai!

Paul, you're the man! Keep on the great vibes! Loved you're performance, you're the best! No doubt!

Are you for real?????
Getting a new drummer????????
Jesus, go see a Neurologist or something!!!!
You seem the kind of fans that only support the band members when they´re gone!!!
Oh bring back Zender, oh bring back Fyffe, oh bring back Wallis!!!!
Stop beeing such babies! You can't compare Fyffe with Zender and Paul, they are diferent, end of storie! I must say that i'm very eagerly to see and hear the contribution of Paul in Studio on the next album!
Gettin' rid of Derrick, BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!

P.S. Great Gig Tiago ;)

Great post Tiago ! I will follow your point of view. I keep the fait ;)

i totally agree with you Tiago and Pedro!

There is another torrent of the audio of the show available at the following site, which I am assured does not have all of the glitches and drop-outs that the one on dimeadozen had. Download, enjoy and share :)

theivorytracker.dyndns.org:6969

It was a great gig!!! They are all unique, brilliant, talented, successful musicians - let nature take it's course! Nature = Jamiroquai.

Thank you David!

things and people changes sometimes not the good way anyway we will see jay s decicion in the futur long live jay...........................when i hear the gig that s what i feel

Thanks sooooo much Mister Rowe !

a little bit weak on the rhytmic may be drums or bass i don t know i m not a specialist but j ay is still going threw the instrument like a bird////// i was in the crowd

Couldn't agree with you more Pedro! The past Jamiroquai was great but so is the present.

the band change and i think its great because jay s got new idear with new people i think he will renew all the time whatever it s his drumer his bass player or his percussion guy whatever he does he must have reasons and i am sure they are musical for the gig i really think that the way of the groove are today there is no new way of playing derrick his not the young guy he was before .life goes on this kind of music doesn t accept no evolution it s moving everyday look at the charts there s a new way of thinking funk a lot of young band are taking a lot from jamiroquai and sell more than jay . young folks brings new idears to support singer /anyway derrick looks like a wonderfull man i m not judging the man but the way the band sound anyway thats what i feel rob him i think got all kind of way of playing to support jay rock funk even classical guitar matt can play piano rhodes use a lot of sound paul do his job has a bass player that the way the all band should be so jay can create different athmospher on the songs cheers the fans

Thank you David! for the link to the show, so the ones that were not there like me can listen and judge for ourselves. Nick, Stu, Paul.... they all rock after all!!
